Default Writing for the web - are puns dead?

When we write for the web, the text needs to simple and straightforward and so on. It's been said that puns are dead because of that.
But perhaps it isn't wuire dead yet.

The story below tells us that scientists have come up with a bot that can recognise simple puns. So maybe we can keep some fun in the writing with SEO in mind.

Default Unfortunately I think it is the end of puns

although, a quick glance at the top headlines on Google News brings up some strange choices. The featured stories are not necessarily the ones with the best keywords. Suggesting Google's algorithms are weighted to the story copy?

My friend came up with a top pun back in the days when we worked at Ananova.com - Dawn French was touring the country playing Bottom in A Midsummer's Nights Dream and the headline was "See the crack of Dawn"

It lasted about half an hour before management spotted it and made him take it down!
